I work as an architect, which for me means I live in the weeds of how to construct a building. However before this I was an activist. While we were all united towards a common goal, it was a collaboration of many voices and personalities. This can be viewed as organized cooperative chaos. I miss that outlet for creativity but due to an injury I’ve been limited in my options as I’ve gotten older.
When I pour paint onto a canvas it lets me cooperate with the media while still enjoying the uncontrollable chaos that the random droplets create. The act of pouring recalls the organized anarchy of community activism that was critical to my growing identity. All the individual colors do their own thing, due to density and physics, while the actions I take tilting the canvas help guide towards a conclusion.
Just as no two communities or individuals will ever have the exact same outlook and needs, each painting is a unique conclusion and impossible to recreate.
